Первое ее издание было подготовлено другом Томаса Мора, великим мыслителем эпохи Ренессанса, Эразмом Роттердамским и вышло в 1516 году в бельгийском городе Лёвен. With the publication of Utopia (1516), Thomas More introduced into the English language not only a new word, but a new way of thinking about the gulf between what ought to be and what is. His Utopia is at once a scathing analysis of the shortcomings of his own society, a realistic suggestion for an alternative mode of social organization, and a satire on unrealistic idealism. Enormously influential, it remains a challenging as well as a playful text. This edition reprints Ralph Robinson's 1556 translation from More's original Latin together with letters and illustrations that accompanied early editions of Utopia.

Utopia was only one of many early modern treatments of other worlds. This edition also includes two other, hitherto less accessible, utopian narratives. New Atlantis (1627) offers a fictional illustration of Francis Bacon's visionary ideal of the role that science should play in the modern society. Henry Neville's The Isle of Pines (1668), a precursor of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, engages with some of the sexual, racial, and colonialist anxieties of the end of the early modern period. Together these texts illustrate the diversity of the early modern utopian imagination, as well as the different purposes to which it could be put.

Pamphlet virulent dirigé contre la société anglaise d'Henri VIII et construction imaginaire proposant en contrepoint l'image d'une société idéale, L'Utopie, publiée en 1516, est la célèbre contribution de l'humaniste chrétien Thomas More au débat philosophique sur les finalités du politique. Ami d'Érasme, dénonçant avec lui les égarements de l'Église et de l'État, More espère, en dressant le tableau de la cité idéale, rappeler à chacun, gouvernants ou gouvernés, la voie du Bien commun. L'inégalité des richesses et l'intolérance religieuse sont les principales cibles de sa critique.

À quoi bon l'utopie ? À force de faire des concessions à l'ordre des choses sous prétexte de réalisme et d'efficacité la réflexion politique finit par perdre toute référence à l'idéal et aux valeurs. Une "utopie" (le mot inventé par More signifie, par ses racines grecques, "lieu qui n'existe pas") n'est donc pas une attitude naïve : symptôme d'une crise morale, elle est aussi et surtout une tentative pour renvoyer une société à ce qu'elle attend d'elle-même. Un rêve, oui, mais pour affermir la volonté politique.

Впервые данный перевод «Утопии» с латинского оригинала был напечатан в 1978 г. в серии издательства «Наука» «Предшественники научного социализма» к 500-летию со дня рождения Томаса Мора. В книгу включены своеобразные вступления к первым изданиям «Утопии» - письма гуманистов, друзей Мора. Ранее они на русский язык не переводились. В приложениях впервые на русском языке публикуются избранные письма Мора и Эразма, отражающие издательскую историю «Утопии». Для данного, объединенного, издания И.Н. Осиновским написана новая, значительно более обширная статья «Томас Мор и его время» (в издании 1973 г. была статья «Жизнь и творчество Томаса Мора», а в издании 1978 г. – «Томас Мор и его «Утопия»). Две другие литературоведческие статьи «Поэзия Томаса Мора» Ю.Ф. Шульца и «История Ричарда III как исторический источник» Е.В. Кузнецова оставлены без изменений. Соответственно, второе, объединенное, издание стало толще первого на 210 страниц.

Raphael Hythloday, a philospher and world traveler, describes to the author and his friend an island nation he has visited called Utopia (combining the Greek ou-topos and eu-topos, for “no place” and “good place,” respectively). Hythloday believes the rational social order of the Utopians is far superior to anything in Europe, while his listeners find many of their customs appealing but absurd. Given the enigmatic ambivalence of the character that More named after himself and the playful Greek puns he sprinkled throughout (including Hythloday’s name, which means “knowing nonsense”), it is difficult to know what precisely More meant his readers to make of all the innovations of his Utopia. But its radical humanism has had an incalculable effect on modern history, and the callenge of its vision is as insistent today as it was in the Renaissance. With an introduction by Jenny Mezciems.

Robert M. Adams’s celebrated translation of Utopia has been meticulously revised for the Second Edition of this Norton Critical Edition as have the accompanying annotations.
"Backgrounds" is designed to assist student readers in an appreciation of Utopia by shedding light on the different points of view contemporary with More’s work. Included are new selections from Saint Benedict and Tasso, as well as a medieval satire on the land of Cockayne. "The Humanist Circle", a carefully chosen selection of letters, includes another important contribution by Erasmus.

"Criticism" includes five new thought-provoking essays by Alistair Fox, Edward L. Surtz, G. R. Elton, Northrop Frye, and Robert M. Adams. Also new are selections from two modern anti-utopias or quasi-utopias―Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and B. F. Skinner’s Walden Two―plus a selection from Edward Bellamy’s once futuristic but now almost contemporary Looking Backward, which may be compared and contrasted with More’s masterpiece.

An updated Selected Bibliography is also included.
