С именем Чарльза Дарвина связан удивительный прецедент - у великого эволюциониста, автора "Происхождения видов" был не менее талантливый конкурент, и любое промедление могло стоить английскому ученому мировой известности. Дело в том, что Дарвин довольно долго откладывал выход "Происхождения видов". Однако заторопился, получив на рецензию рукопись статьи молодого британского натуралиста, который независимо от авторитетного ученого и почти одновременно с ним сформулировал теорию естественного отбора. Им был Альфред Рассел Уоллес. Уоллес не считал нужным развивать своё понимание естественного отбора столь обстоятельно и последовательно, как это делал Дарвин, но зато именно он выступил с едкой критикой ламаркизма и ввёл в научный оборот термин "дарвинизм".
Настоящая книга Уоллеса посвящена изложению вопроса о происхождении видов на основании тех же общих положений, которые были приняты Дарвином, но с несколько иной точки зрения, выработанной почти тридцатилетним обсуждением вопроса, при помощи множества новых фактов и как многих новых, так и старых теорий.
В своей книге автор хотел только изложить теорию естественного отбора таким образом, чтобы всякий образованный читатель мог составить себе ясное понятие о труде Дарвина и до известной степени понять действительное значение его великого принципа.
