Houses haunted by the skull-bones of a dead man! Vampires! Haunted steamships! Dolls like Chuckie -- but nicer! Horror fans will adore F. Marion Crawford's Wandering Ghosts: Crawford had a sensibility and a gift a lot like Peter Straub's (though no one could mistake this book for a collection of Straub's stories -- their talents might be similar, but their subject matter isn't). But, oddly, he isn't remembered, like Stoker and Hodgson and Shelley, as a horror writer, nor, like Robert Louis Stevenson, (who gave the world both Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) as a writer of adventure. More like Henry James, we suppose: the man had a reputation, in his day, as a serious writer. Yuck. This book, at least, is a horror collection. We know you'll love it.

Somebody asked for the cigars. We had talked long, and the conversation was beginning to languish; the tobacco smoke had got into the heavy curtains, the wine had got into those brains which were liable to become heavy, and it was already perfectly evident that, unless somebody did something to rouse our oppressed spirits, the meeting would soon come to its natural conclusion, and we, the guests, would speedily go home to bed, and most certainly to sleep.

    Excerpt from Zoroaster

The hall of the banquets was made ready for the feast in the palace of Babylon. That night Belshazzar the king would drink wine with a thousand of his lords, and be merry before them; and everything was made ready.

From end to end of the mighty nave, the tables of wood, overlaid with gold and silver, stood spread with those things which the heart of man can desire; with cups of gold and of glass and of jade; with great dishes heaped high with rare fruits and rarer flowers; and over all, the last purple rays of the great southern sun came floating through the open colonnades of the porch, glancing on the polished marbles, tinging with a softer hue the smooth red plaster of the walls, and lingering lovingly on the golden features and the red-gold draperies of the vast statue that sat on high and overlooked the scene.

  • Man Overboard! Фрэнсис Кроуфорд
    Издательство: Мультимедийное издательство Стрельбицкого
Francis Marion Crawford (August 2, 1854 – April 9, 1909) was an American writer noted for his many novels, especially those set in Italy, and for his classic weird and fantastic stories. &uot;Man Overboard!" – This is one of his stories. Peculiar happenings aboard the schooner Helen B. Jackson when one night during a storm, the small crew found themselves diminished by one. Somebody had gone overboard, and it was surmised that it was one of the twin Benton brothers. But oddly enough, it seemed that the ‘presence’ of the missing twin continued to exist on board during the following weeks. For example, one extra set of silverware was found to be used after each meal, but nobody claimed to be using them. What then did happen that stormy night, and which brother, if indeed it was one of the brothers, was the man who went overboard? • For the Blood Is the Life Фрэнсис Кроуфорд
    Издательство: Мультимедийное издательство Стрельбицкого
Francis Marion Crawford (1854 – 1909) was an American writer noted for his many novels, especially those set in Italy, and for his classic weird and fantastic stories. Although Francis Marion Crawford is principally remembered as a master of fantastical literature, that portion of his vast output is quite small, limited to a handful of horror and ghost stories, such as his well-known short works “The Upper Birth”, “Man Overboard!” and the above mentioned “For the Blood is the Life.” His writings that depict Italian life and culture, however, are much more numerous. “For the Blood is the Life”, this story tells the classic gothic horror account of a young man in the thrall of a vampire, and…yes, there WILL be blood. Among the most significant works Francis Marion Crawford: Man Overboard!, The Doll's Ghost, The Upper Berth, For the Blood Is the Life, The Screaming Skull, Ave Roma Immortalis, Khaled, A Tale of Arabia, Corleone: A Tale of Sicily, Fair Margaret: A Portrait, Mr. Isaacs, A Tale of Modern India, In the Palace of the King: A Love Story of Old Madrid, Marietta: A Maid of Venice, Casa Braccio, Ave Roma Immortalis, The Little City of Hope: A Christmas Story, Cecilia: A Story of Modern Rome, Paul Patoff, The Diva's Ruby, Arethusa and many more.
