Feminist in its leaning, Desai’s compassionate novel focuses on the role of sisters, daughters and mothers within the family. This domestic drama is set in the depths of Old Delhi and details the tensions of the post-colonial condition after Independence and partition. There is a clear, symbolic stratification between New and Old Delhi, with the latter becoming a place of stagnation and frustration, and the family is separated as the nation has been. Desai has said that she considers Clear Light of Day to be her most autobiographical text, as it gives priority to the neighbourhood and the era in which she grew up.

The final story is of Ravi, living hermit-like in the burnt-out shell of his family home high up in the Himalayan mountains. He cultivates not only silence and solitude but a secret hidden away in the woods, concealed from sight. When a film crew from Delhi intrude upon his seclusion, it compels him to withdraw even further until he magically and elusively disappears…

Gone are the days when Nanda Kaul watched over her family and played the part of Vice-Chancellor's wife. Leaving her children behind in the real world, the busier world, she has chosen to spend her last years alone in the mountains in Kasauli, in a secluded bungalow called Carignano.
